Up and Coming Novelist... Kat Nichols!!

Good morning!!!!

It's Wednesday. So that means another segment of my Indie spotlight segment.

One day soon I'll think of a real title for that. :)

Today I am super excited to have Kat Nichols on my blog!!!! I'm really anxious to share her story with you because Kat is not actually published yet! But she will be soon. And I know a lot of you are going through this same process of writing and editing, deciding cover art and working hard to build a readership that is excited about your release!

Kat is going to share a little bit about her journey and what she's going through and then you get an exclusive teaser of Family Secrets, her debut novel!!!

Here is Kat Nichols!

Hi everyone!  Kat Nichols, here.  You may have seen posts recently from my fellow Rebels, Caylie, Theresa and Regan, so I hope you’re ready for another one.
I’m in a very different place than those three wonderful ladies – smack dab in the middle of re-writing – and Rachel thought you might like to hear what it’s like in the center of the insanity.
I started writing my book, tentatively titled, Family Secrets, in October 2013 after meeting several other women on Rachel’s street team.  I plotted out the story and got writing right away but was quickly overtaken by life, work and the love/hate relationship I think every writer has with her writing.  I never would’ve kept at it if it hadn’t been for my Rebel Writers.  Watching them finish their first drafts one after the other inspired me to get mine done as well.  And I did!  I officially finished my first draft on April 12, 2014

Here’s what it’s about…
Seventeen year old Sophia Morganthal has been living with her best friend since the death of her mother the year before. Now without both parents, she’s struggled to move on but her new normal is blown to bits after learning about a family she never knew about. When she arrives at her grandmother’s home in Illinois, she finds more than just a family; she discovers a legacy of witchcraft.
Coven laws require that the current Matriarch name her successor, who must be a direct descendent, within the next two years. If no one is named, a battle for the coven leadership will begin and it could get ugly.
Unfortunately for Blackthorne Coven, there’s only one person who fits the bill. Sophia. But she’s untrained, uninitiated and completely unprepared.
Between juggling her new family and training to become a witch, Sophia didn't think life could get more complicated but then she meets Connor and realizes she might be over her head.
When danger threatens everything she holds dear, will she be ready for the fight of her life?

So now what?  Well, now it’s time to rewrite, revise and edit.  A first draft can be pretty ugly.  I know mine is, so I’m sitting down with a printed copy and a bright red pen, checking for plot holes, taking out all those adverbs and double checking my spelling.  Of course, things keep coming up that I want or need to add so I have to work to put those in as well.  Once this is done, it’s sent to beta readers to review.  They’ll let me know what they think worked or didn’t work, or where my story might need to be strengthened.  Then, after I review and possibly revise due to their advice, it’s off to the editor.  Whew… sounds like a lot of work, huh?
Wait!  There’s more! Beyond all the actual writing, there’s promotion, book covers, blog posts, websites, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and on and on and you get it.  But I love it.  It feels amazing to do something I love and I can’t wait to share it with the world.
Speaking of, I have Family Secrets tentatively scheduled for publishing in December of this year.  How about a sneak peek at Sophia and Connor?

“Alright, I’ll stop being a jerk.”
“Is that even possible?” I asked, trying to hold back my grin.
He tried to appear offended for all of a minute before laughing at himself. I loved his laugh.  It was husky and low, which kick started the butterflies in my stomach, and no matter how I was feeling always made me want to join in.
“You really have no idea,” he smirked. “I keep my extra special jerkiness just for when you’re around.”
“Oh, that’s an incentive to hang out with you. You really should’ve kept that to yourself.”
He tossed his head back and laughed before turning straight-faced. “I’d be on my best behavior,” he paused, “at least for the first five minutes or so.” Then he grinned, flashing his adorable dimples at me and making my knees weak.
“If that,” I responded. He looked ready to argue the point when the bell rang, ending our time together for the day. Study hall always seemed to fly by. I sighed. I didn’t want it to end.
Apparently, neither did he. “Do you think you could blow off lunch with your group on Monday? We could meet here.”
“And do what?” I asked, grabbing my books off the table and heading towards the front of the library.
“I don’t know; anything I guess.”
I thought about spending another lunch period with Alexa and her friends and grimaced. “Sure. I can meet here on Monday.”
“Great! See ya, Sophie.” He tugged on a curl that was hanging loose on the side of my face and was gone. My heart fluttered in my chest and I leaned against a bookcase, feeling light headed. He called me Sophie. I smiled. Only my parents and Abby called me Sophie. I stood there with a goofy grin on my face staring after him until my shoulder was knocked from behind.
“Sorry,” said the girl as she pushed by me but her tone made it clear she was anything but.

I rubbed my shoulder, watching as she walked away until recognition hit. It was the girl Connor had been arguing with, the one in the other coven. What the hell was that about?

I hope you enjoyed that little look at Sophia and Connor. Keep checking my page katnichols.com or my Facebook page for more updates, teasers and the cover reveal.  In the meantime, the Rebel Writers have more great books coming out.  I think Stormy’s Duty Bound is up next so keep an eye on TheRebelWriters.com as well for more information.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on my website, PM me on Facebook or email me at KatNicholsAuthor@gmail.com.  I’d love to hear from you.
