The Big, Bad, Blog

Does that title sound ominous?

Because it's not. I mean, there's no bad news or anything attached to it. So, no worries!

I have the day off today. Well and by that I mean AJ(aka Dora) had school off today, so she is not here. It's just me and my girls!

Not that one child makes that much of a difference around here. But I did get to sleep in like an hour or so this morning. Thank you Stella who made it through Sid the Science Kid on PBS while I stole some more Z's.

That is a weird show. And Stella doesn't really like it. But PBS is all we get in the bedroom as far as early morning television. So we're stuck with it if mommy wants to sleep in.

I've noticed that lots of kid shows today are weird. Like really weird.

Wonder Pets. (Ming Ming you could not be more annoying!)
Yo Gabba Gabba. (Basically like an acid trip. And what is with the human on there? He totally freaks me out. Plus, they always have these odd celebrity guests. No, Jack Black, I do not want you teaching my child your weirdo dance.)
Sid the Science Kid. (Could the people look any stranger? Or over-act any harder? For real, they are cartoons.)
Max and Ruby. (Seriously, where are their parents and why doesn't Max ever get into trouble?)
Caillou. (Another one that never gets into trouble. And, he is so whiny.)

And that's only a few.

I wonder if the shows we watched when we were younger were just as strange to our parents... But I remember them being Awesome(That's right, with a capital A.).

Like Sesame Street. I realize this is still on, but it's not till mid-morning and we are never watching TV then.

Or Zoobilee Zoo! Who doesn't love adults dressed up like Peacocks and other various Zoo type animals?

Muppet Babies? Um. Awesome. Where are Muppet Babies anyways? That seems like kind of a timeless cartoon.

Mr. Rogers Neighborhood. RIP.

That was some good television. Except that if my older brothers ever caught me watching those shows, they would make me turn it off and go watch day time soaps with them. That's not even a joke. They totally drug me out of my parents bedroom where I was quietly and secretly enjoying PBS to watch Days of Our Lives with them. Something that they called "real" TV.

I know.

Even Saturday morning Cartoons were amazing and way high caliber compared to the crap that's on there now.

Shows like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Rainbow Bright. My little Pony. X-Men. Alvin and the Chipmunks. Gummy Bears. Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers. Winni the Pooh. Garfield. Bugs Bunny. Tom and Jerry. California Raisins. Captain Planet. Attack of the Killer Tomato's. Darkwing Duck. Tail Spin. Not to mention Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and Saved by the Bell(My personal favorite.)?

Just to name a few.

And that's only Saturday mornings. Don't even get me started on Friday Nights. What was that called? TGIF and they always had someone hosting it in between commercial breaks. Full House, Family Matters and Step by Step.

Ok, obviously I'm a product of the 90's but in my defence we did have the best child hood. I suppose when I was Stella's age it was all stuff still from the 80's. And I'll claim those cartoons too. Pound Puppies. Carebears. Scooby Doo. Flinstones. Smurfs. The Jetsons. Archie. Raggedy Ann and Andy. And Popeye. I mean come on, that is quality TV.

So what happened?

How did we go from Darkwing Duck to Word Girl? The duck was a way better superhero and he didn't have a smart-alec monkey tagging along. Or from Rainbow Bright to Maggie and the Ferocious Beast? At least Rainbow Bright explained where she was and didn't leave assuming she was on some weird drug trip.

So what is my point to all of this?

Sadly, I'm not sure I have one. I don't even remember how this blog became about cartoons, I think I had a different topic in mind at one point....

I just get nostalgic thinking about childhood and all that I got to grow up with. How Saturday Morning Cartoons made an impression on me. Defined a portion of my life, I spent eating cereal in the living room, curled up in a blanket, sitting next to my little brother.

But Saturday Morning cartoons are less then normal now. We've tried to watch them and frankly they just don't make sense. Something about a Horse Riding School and other ones that are straight from Japan(nothing wrong with that, I just don't understand them.).

Is this really what is going to make up Stella and Scarlett's Memories? Is their nostalgia going to stem from confusion and boredom? Yugio is really the modern day version of Teenage Mutant Turtles? Um. No. I don't think so.

I hope not at least.

But then again, at the pace I'm going, my girls won't have time for Saturday Morning Cartoons.

They will be too busy with Soccer, Dance and Competitions.

What a culture we live in.

  1. Rachel I agree! Sid the Science Kid makes me want to poke my mind's eye out and my ears. That Gerald kid sounds like a smoker and Mae sounds like she is smoking the Mary Jane. I have to admit I like Super Why and Isaiah loves it too. He watches too much tv, but I am kinda lazy in the mornings. I think the problem with kids shows these days is they are all trying to be educational and our shows (minus Sesame Street) were about having fun.
